Caring Homes for the Developmentally Disabled.

Welcome to Family Living Center, Inc.  Our Mission is to provide for and represent the interests of, developmentally disabled residents in Oakland County Michigan. We care for those who need full time home care,  twenty four (24) hours a day, under the supervision and/or assistance of our qualified, trained support staff. We endeavor to prepare the individual for the least restrictive, most desired living situation to meet his/her independence and well-being needs with dignity and respect.

A note about our founder. Mabel Higgs has passed away. She died this past January 8th and was 97 years old. She had advised an old friend just in her last few days that she had changed her mind about her oft stated goal of living to be 100 years old. She had fallen back on November 7th and broken her left hip and left foot. She spent a couple weeks in a hospital and then the remainder of November, all of December and these early days of 2023 in a nearby senior care and rehab facility. Mabel Higgs was a fighter, a champion of the battles for civil and human rights and her passion, the care of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She was a graduate of Howard University, an award winning care giver and business woman. She traveled the world and loved a celebration. She is survived by her sons, their wives, her grandchildren and great grandchildren and hundreds of loving family members and friends from coast to coast.

Who we are.

Family Living Center (FLC) was incorporated in 1979 by Mabel Higgs and our organization has been assisting adult individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities in Oakland County, since that time.

Family Living Center (FLC) presently operates 5 (five) group home facilities. Each located across Oakland County, in Bloomfield Hills, Lathrup Village, Troy, Waterford and West Bloomfield.

Family Living Center (FLC) currently serves 30 residents among the homes.  Our staff includes 31 (thirty one) qualified, trained Direct Care Workers and Home Managers, many of whom have been employed at Family Living Center over twenty-five(25) years.

Each Direct Care Worker and Home Managers are fully trained as required by the State of Michigan and EasterSeals/MORC (Macomb Oakland Regional Center).  Each employee goes through a thorough check of references, finger prints and back ground checks.  Once hired, each employee will have CPR and First Aid training, physicals and TB tests/shots as required.

Family Living Center (FLC) is a non-profit agency, we contract with Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) and receive funding from  other local community mental health boards and their affiliates and the  Michigan Department of Community Mental Health.  We also receive supports such as nursing, training, social work and psychology through EasterSeals/MORC (Macomb Oakland Regional Center, Inc.)

Family Living Center (FLC) works in association with numerous agencies, local and intermediate school districts, Michigan Assisted Living Association and many others.
